Spark Deactivation Appeals Nightmare

But yeah, so over the week we got an email from uh which we never do. I mean, we maybe get few and far between four emails a year if we're lucky, uh, other than spam. We get a lot of spam.

But uh, I want to throw this out there. Uh, this is someone from Arkansas, and it's about Spark. And I don't think I can help this person, but I'm gonna read through it. If you hear this and have an idea or maybe have experienced some of the same things, uh, please like reach out to me so I can try to help this lady. So she says, I thought I'd reach out for some advice for advice as to how you okay. So if I read the like in my head, you know when you're reading your head and if it's like a messed up thing, you like correct it in your head and you don't even think about it. But I might not I might not do that when I'm reading it. Okay, Ron. Ron Burgundy. Uh advice uh as to how you prove your identity after being activated. I had signed into the Spark app, went through identification process of taking three angle selfies and move forward to my first order of the day. Immediately after sliding completed, I was deactivated. This was January 8 of this year. First, it was told my license uh so through the appeals proper process, I got an abst I got an abstract, I'm not sure what this from NYS DMV perfectly clean and my license doesn't renew until 2026. Second, it was an individual invalid then fraudulent insurance through appeals process. I gave them my current insurance card and the declarations paid, proving that not only was it above their requirements, but absolutely not fraudulent. Finally, my identity was in question. So again, through the appeals process, I set my driver's license and selfie. So that's that's a lot. That is a lot. After doing this several times, uh after doing this several times, this be because uh oh my god, after doing this several times of doing this because after completing each task, they brought up the same issues over and over. I believe I have now submitted approximately 10 appeals, maybe more. I'm now stuck in the waiting for my insurance to be verified reason. I've been told by Walmart and Arkansas that Walmart has absolutely no oversight for Spark, which cannot be true as they actually acquired DDI in August of 2022, which is true. Uh, Arkansas has been overwhelmed with in-person driver complaints about this exact issue, yet, as with in-store complaints by customers, vendors, and employees, there is no escalation process above the immediate location that actually addresses and handles recurring issues, complaints, concerns, or problems. I've been that loyal corporate girl. I completely understand that an independent contract, we are at-will workers, but still there must be some sort of corporate oversight. Do we not deserve the same respect as someone under their immediate corporate hierarchy just to get an honest reason for deactivation and reinstate if we have proven it was unjust without credible or cause? So this was what he was like since you personally know the CEO of DDI and may or may not have faced the same deactivation issues. I thought you might have some insight on the situation.

Yeah, I mean, uh, yeah, we're not tight. I mean, we've interviewed him twice. Uh nice guy, his name's Aaron. Uh, but I almost positive he has no handle on DDI anymore. Walmart does own it, but they do kind of run it separately. Um, so uh yeah, I I I'm not sure what to do there. Yeah, talking to your local corporate or your local Walmart's not gonna do anything.

I mean Yeah, they don't have any deal or any control over that, I don't think whatsoever.

And if they do, you're never gonna get to talk to that person. I mean, talking to a loader, then an assistant, and then so on and so forth, I mean, it's gonna be tough. And I and I totally like feel bad for her. I just recommended her email and call every day because Yeah, just stay with them.

And I would also recommend too, I'm hoping this isn't your only gig, and I don't know when you started Spark, if it's you started this year and then you got the deactivation or you've done it for years and years. Um, but yeah, I would just keep emailing them, calling them. I mean, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And I'm not saying that to be rude to them or anything like that, but you never know what kind of tech person you're gonna get and who you're gonna talk to. Somebody actually gives a shit about their job that day.

Yeah. Um, I do that with Amazon all the time, and some and all of a sudden you'll just get a response like, yep, I'll take care of that for you. Thank you so much. So whether they're annoyed by me or if somebody actually cares, I don't know.

And I I will I I do feel your pain, your empathy with Walmart Spark. I mean, I've talked to tech, and it's just like I had a problem where I wasn't getting orders and uh and I couldn't uh couldn't figure it out. Yeah, it sucks because like that was my main that's it's you know, I ebb and flow what my main gig is, but that was it. And I called them and it it lasted for three or four hours and then finally it corrected whatever it was. So Steve says the squeaky wheel gets replaced. Not in my union shop, bro. Not in my union shop. There's some people that I wish would get replaced, but you know that's true everywhere, right? For sure. So yeah, if you hear or know anything or how this person can uh can you know work through this problem, I would uh I would love to hear it.

So yeah, she she shoot another, she does an email, so we we'll get two and two in a in one quarter. Yeah. And uh if you got any contact information, anybody she might be able to to touch base with, whether it's a phone number or an email, or you know, any ideas on how she might get that taken care of, because that is frustrating. We've all been there trying to do an app, and whether it's a background check from Uber and you get locked out or oh god, do you remember that whole thing for for months and months? It was a week, yeah. Some of some people was it was for a couple months. I think I got locked out for about six weeks.

Paying Extra Just To Get Paid

All right, gig economy in the news. Uh, a lot of videos tonight. Um, so that'll be fun. Yes. Um, but this one uh is called So Imoro Gig Economy Workers Charge Fee to Get Paid Quicker. So this applies. Uh, I think this is over in the UK, but it's uh retail assistance on low on low pay using Young One's platform to wait up to 30 days for earnings or be charged for quick payment. So apparently this company they do a lot of like and we do some retail gig work here. Um, it's called oh, what's it called? Hire. Uh there's a bunch of apps where you can do like stocking of the shelves and just, you know, whatever.

So retail systems have accused gig economy firm of holding them to ransom by pay making them pay a fee if they want to receive their wages within 30 days. A new payment system brought in by Young Ones, which supplies freelance retail assistance to many well-known high street stores, charges gig workers 4.8% of their earnings to be paid in one minute, or 2.9% to be paid in three days. If they decline, they typically have to wait 30 days. Uh previously the workers were paid in three days without a charge. Uh, people have said they have worked at least six shifts at this place and uh they need the money to buy essentials and pay bills. That's why people do these gig works for short time to grab the cash. Um, some of the workers that says last week still waiting to be paid for shifts in November and early December. So this was like in early January that this was written. Um, you really can't badger their managers because you're a freelancer, you have no voice, you may not get any more shifts if you're seeing outspoken. Um, well, I mean, I guess that's the case if if the managers are assigning the shifts, but typically it would be an app. Um, so yeah, this is kind of fucked up.

It's yeah, it is. I mean, uh, especially when you know they're used to getting paid without having any kind of a charge, and all of a sudden they slap this on you. And it's tough, you know. I've I think I've worked one or two jobs of my life where we got paid once a month, and it's you really, you know, you got a budget, you really have to, yeah. Uh and especially with gig work, I mean, if you're doing multiple gigs, you're not even gonna remember what you made a month ago. So it'd be much easier for them to rip you off uh on some of your pay from from you know a month ago. Um it's just uh you know, it's aggravating that these companies put these kind of obstacles in the way and just tack on more and more fees to try to take more of the money.

Yeah, I mean, it's already a struggle. Um, and like I said, I haven't heard anything around here, but they're gonna get sued, probably, I guess. Um, like the whole Walmart thing, you know, for a while there, they were like dinging you to take money out of branch, even if you got it like slow like transferred. Right, you know what I mean? And they got rid of that. And as much as I we should on Spark, their one card, I mean, again, I I think they own it. I would maybe not. I haven't researched it, but the one card is great, man. I'm really loving the uh the features on that and getting the earnings like right away. Um which I don't deposit right away. I actually I kind of have a standard, and when it hits a hundred bucks, I just transfer it over. Like that's just kind of where I'm doing it. But I could transfer it over every single time. Um, I've used it to get a little kickback. And you know their savings account is three and a half percent.

Really? So it's not that's I mean, my savings are way beyond what you get in a normal bank.

Yeah, I think my my credit union is under well, I have a pretty high one in my checking account, up to ten grand, but my my savings account is like less than one percent or something. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So even if you need to, if you're looking to get a little savings, I mean it's uh I love it. So I I'm I'm very very happy with the one card. But yeah, this is this is too bad that you know these companies are taking advantage of these workers, so yeah, they really are.

Waymo Glitch And Michigan Testing

Yeah, this is uh this is video of a Waymo car that um for some reason just kind of it looks like it veered into the wrong lane and then it tries to correct itself to get back in the other lane and it starts backing up into oncoming traffic.

And he just starts inching backwards and inching backwards and inching backwards. And yeah, just like if you're in that back seat, you're like, oh my god, I'm getting ready to die.

Yeah. Um, yeah, that's interesting. I I feel like when when that kind of stuff happens in the real world without a like a self-driving car, everyone just kind of freezes and lets that person like, okay, you clearly fucked up, it's fine, just back up and get the fuck in the right way. Like make your adjustments, get where you need to go, and everything starts flowing again, you know. But yeah, you get something like that, and it starts inching back, and then it moves forward, and you're like, you don't know what's gonna happen. Yeah, it's it is a little scary. So as we see that, there's an article that says Waymo to expand self-driving testing to several cities in 2025. And guess what? Michigan is on the list.

Yeah, the expansion will include testing in San Diego, Las Vegas, along existing trials in Truckee, California, Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Well, I think they want to test it up there for one because there's like six cars on the road up there. Exactly. Once you cross the bridge, there's a a total of the UP is about a hundred people. Um, but yeah, I don't know if they're gonna do it in the winter. I I don't know, but um it says it plans to deploy fewer than 10 vehicles per city, initially operating them manually through high traffic areas, high traffic. So the deer out of the high track such traffic areas such as city centers and freeways, the process will span a few months before progressing to more advanced autonomous testing. So I mean, what are we doing, y'all? Like, you know, I thought that was hilarious. I saw that video and then this article about how they're expanding. I'm like, God, I just don't understand it. Um uh let's see, they will test in the UP because all its issues won't make national news. I mean, if it makes any news, I'm gonna talk about it.

Why People Attack Robot Cars

Yeah, this next one, yeah. Another Waymo related story, and this one is not uh what what the car did, it's what people keep doing to these Waymo cars. We've seen it before where they'll put traffic cones on their hoods or you know, different things that'll mess them up, or sometimes they do this, they get really mad at the cars. Um, and this happened out in I think San Francisco. Um yeah, self-driving Waymo car. Luckily, there was nobody in it um because this group of just a bunch of people, a lot of them were look like juveniles, um, just attack an empty Waymo car. They ripped off its door, they smashed its windows, there's people standing on the hood of the car jumping up and down, they're hitting it, kicking it. Um it says, you know, this attack is very similar to one that happened in San Francisco last year when a group analyzed and set another autonomous car on fire. So uh they say in Texas test cars have also been targeted. Shows that people, you know, some people some of it I think is frustration, but you know, you wonder how much of it's just people being hoodlums.

And and and we know that these are expensive cars, you know. Most of them, like we said, a lot of them times they're Porsches or um you know, uh some other very expensive car. Uh they said in this story that just the cost of a new windshield for this car is about twelve hundred dollars. Um what what are they gonna do? How are they going to um deal with these kind of problems when it happens, and how often uh are they gonna see this?

Well, yeah, that's the thing. I mean, you hope it, you know, the whatever the what am I trying to say? The allure of it dies down, you know, once it becomes more commonplace that they're around and it doesn't happen very often. But I mean, maybe make some sort of, and I think it says that in the article, something about some legal framework to protect them a little bit more.

They're gonna have to, uh, and you know, all this stuff is new, so the laws probably aren't written to cover this kind of thing, but they're looking at and you know, writing some things such as uh being able to share the footage from the cars with law enforcement, uh, you know, putting a ban on anybody caught vandalizing a car, um, increasing police presence in A-B testing sites, um, tougher penalties for anyone that's caught attacking an autonomous vehicle. You know, it depends on um depends on what they do to it as far as what you know what charge you're gonna get. Um in California, if the damage is at less than four hundred, it's a misdemeanor above that and it's a felony. So I mean just the windshield that they knocked out was twelve hundred. Dollars. So you know, right there it's a felony. And there's like, I mean, there's like 40, 50 people around this car. You know, it's not just two or three.

Well, what they should do is is, you know, I don't know. And we talked uh we had that one video where it sounded like she didn't have any fucking control of that car, but maybe there's some sort of feature that if when it knows it's like things are being damaged or something, it just alerts the police right away. So like if there's a car in the area they can roll on, you know what I mean? You know, just so that you know, so we're not I mean, because you know, like the street races that they're trying to, you know, that kind of stuff where I mean it's we got all this tech. Why can't the second it well, you know what it should do?

But now what they're doing is giving the uh customer an option to uh let me slide this over because I'm annoyingly cranking my neck to um select drivers arrive to pick me up that they they know, um, or you don't want drivers to know. So like you can like spring it on them or surprise surprise, motherfucker. Uh or you can just, you know, they don't need to know. Uh one of the big thing is though, oh god, where was that? I missed it. Gosh dang it. This is why I highlight I read through this whole thing. Um I fucking hate this. Oh, okay. If a rider opts into notifying drivers and a driver requests to cancel their trip at pickup, the driver will receive a notification reminding them that it's against the law to refuse to transport someone because of their service animal and confirming that they wish to proceed with cancellation. And quotes any driver who violates this policy may permanently lose access to the platform. Well, it's it's kind of the same thing. Like, obviously, I would never condone um you denying somebody a ride because of a service animal, because clearly they need that, but it's the same thing that guy with that lift with that uh that woman that was overweight. Um shut the fuck up. Like just cancel the bitch and move on. If there's no proof, but the thing is we all know, right? Because someone claimed that I was drinking and I haven't driven in eight months and I was uh put on hold. So if the d if the passenger feels that you did discriminate, I mean you may still be in trouble. So the city of Los Angeles offered free rides uh to take people to evacuation shelters during the wildfires. Um, you know, this same thing's been done in uh you know, different places around the country during hurricanes and other disasters. Um but they're talking about how the California workers, you know, they have certain protections about you know inhaling um you know, when the air quality is really bad, you know, they have to have uh their company has to give them certain protections, certain, you know, mask or or training on how to deal with things. But right share workers being independent contractors, they're they're not protected by any of that. So they're out here picking these people up and trying to take them to safety, but you know, they don't have any of the protection um that people working for uh you know full-time job or W2 job might have.

Yeah, I did too, and then I read it more when he he commented back and said something. Well, when I was riding in it like that. So gotcha. But um, so I have Uber Comfort on. It's not been uh like close enough for me to take it. Like my car's relatively cleaned out. I mean, it wasn't it's not like it's trashed or anything, but and then I have Uber Eats on and I've dabbled with DoorDash. Oh, I forgot my DoorDash story. Damn it. I just remembered it. So before when you would take a DoorDash, if you weren't heading in the direction of the order, they would just they would just unassign you, right? So me alt ult multi-apping, I take a DoorDash and then I get an Uber that's even better. And I'm like, oh, I can do both these. Well, turns out it went a lot longer than expected, and I was um I got a contract violation. I was 33 minutes late for the pickup. Yeah, oops, but they didn't own to sign it, so I still did it. It was still I still it was still a decent order because I'm not taking shit on DoorDad. If it's not a dollar a mile or more, I'm not taking it. But uh but so I did so they are like, hey, this is a contract violation. This is this is my first one ever. I've done like 600 deliveries because I would just assume they would unassign it. So I'm like, okay, fine, whatever. And like, do you want to dispute it? Well, I actually did dispute it. This isn't the reason I I wasn't able to do it, but the map was fucked up when I hit directions in the app, it wouldn't work, so I had to type in the address on my other phone to get to it. So I used that as an excuse. I had 30 minutes. 33 minutes. I haven't heard a response back from them. That was, you know, that was Saturday or Sunday.
